Under this proposed law, federal agencies could not just skip town

Still annoyed by the Trump administration’s relocation of two Agriculture Department bureaus, a senator has introduced legislation to raise the bar for agency moves. It would require agencies to do some homework before they move. The Federal Drive with Tom Temin  talked about the bill with Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.).

Tom Temin You had introduced this bill in the last Congress, and I noticed it gained one page. But thank you for only having a nine page bill. Fairly simple what you’re calling for.

Chris Van Hollen Right. And I’ve teamed up with Representative Wexton (D-Va.) from Virginia, once

Commerce’s CATTS procurement exemplifies all that’s wrong with federal small business contracting

The Commerce Department’s Commerce Acquisition for Transformational Technology Services (CATTS) multiple award contract is the perfect microcosm of all that’s wrong with federal procurement and small business.

Despite the fact there are thousands of contracts that agencies award every day going off without a hitch — at least that’s the important reminder from former federal executive David Drabkin and many others over the years — the Commerce effort to create a high-dollar, long-term relationship with…

White House sets standard code for federal scientists to follow across government

The White House, following up on one of President Joe Biden’s earliest priorities in office, is setting a common standard for science and research policies across the federal government.

What the FAA messaging system debacle said to all federal contractors

Few people heard of the FAA’s NOTAM system until it crashed and brought aviation to a standstill earlier this month. The FAA blamed a contractor for accidentally deleting files, such that the system failed to synchronize. The Federal Drive with Tom Temin next guest says the incident speaks to all contractors about the need to supervise their people. Federal sales and marketing consultant Larry Allen joins me now.

Tom Temin
Somebody wasn’t watching the watcher or something broke down here in a procedure, Larry, the files were deleted. What’s your interpretation of what happened?

Larry Allen
Tom, I think probably

When it comes to modernizing back office functions across the government, sometimes you have to start at the bottom.

Forget about the cloud or the modern software for a second, and focus on basic definitions.

Jeff Pollack, the HR Line of Business program manager at OPM, said they are focusing on…

This group says the federal government, for all the auctions, is still a spectrum hog

A technology trade association is urging Congress to update the law that lets the [Federal Communications Commission (FCC)] auction off radio spectrum held by the government. In fact, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation basically said the government continues to hog much spectrum that could be more efficiently used by industry. For details,  Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke with Joe Kane, ITIF’s Director of broadband and spectrum policy, Joe Kane.

Tom Temin
It seems like we’ve been talking about spectrum for 25 years now.

Joe Kane
Yeah, it’s a it’s a big topic. And there’s always need for more,
