Florida authorities on Friday charged a man with unlicensed contracting, insurance fraud and failing to obtain workers’ compensation coverage on his workers, after he solicited Tampa-area homeowners for roof replacement work.

John Sutton, doing business as Kaizen Construction Group, had salesmen go door to door in Pasco County in 2021 and 2022, instructing homeowners on what to say in filing an insurance claim, Florida’s chief financial officer said in a bulletin. Some of the homeowners agreed to sign “direct to pay” documents, essentially assigning benefits to the roofing company.

A Vancouver, Washington contractor was found to owe $201,223 in wages and interest to 20 employees on construction projects at four area schools.

The contractor, 360 Sheetmetal LLC, and owner Beverley Martin, were also found to owe more than $115,000 in penalties for failure to pay prevailing wage and file required reports when working on public projects.

Australia Contractor Downer Faces Class Action Lawsuit for Misreporting on Contract

Australian contractor Downer said on Monday it faces a shareholder class action for allegedly making some misrepresentations and withholding certain information about a maintenance contract in its domestic utilities business.

Downer is currently under investigation by New South Wales’ Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) for some of its employees allegedly taking kickbacks and favoring certain sub-contractors for a contract awarded by Transport for NSW, the state’s transport authority.

In February, the Sydney-headquartered company said it had misreported the earnings from this contract, with post-tax earnings inflated by about A$22.2 million ($14.82 million) between April 2020 and June 2022.

Washington Contractor Fined $400K for Safety Violations in Fatal Trench Collapse

A Kent, Washington contractor is facing more than $400,000 in fines for safety violations that led to the death of a construction worker last year in Renton.

Surjit Gill, 36, was killed when the dirt walls of the trench he was working in collapsed and buried him.

The Washington Department of Labor & Industries cited AAA Contractors Inc. for three willful and one serious violation in connection with the incident. The company was also cited for several general violations. The fines total $437,581.00.

DOL Says It Recovered $330,000 from NC Contractor that Misclassified Workers

The U.S. Department of Labor said it has recovered about $330,000 in back wages from a North Carolina contractor that misclassified workers as independent contractors.

“Employers who misclassify employees as independent contractors deny them overtime wages and may deny them state-required workers compensation and unemployment insurance protections,” the department’s Wage and Hour Division district director, Richard Blaylock, said in a statement. “We suggest that employers review their pay practices to make sure their practices comply with the law, and to contact us with questions or concerns.”
