Main Beach Security Concerns Prompt Bathroom Upgrade

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The Crystal Lake Park District is looking to install new locks on its bathrooms as a way to improve security at Main Beach.

The interior doors in the bathrooms on the north side of the beach, which are also located next to the Main Office, cannot be locked “due to the distance to the beachside exit,” according to Crystal Lake Park District documents. This creates safety concerns since those who enter the bathrooms from the beach also gain access to the building.

And since the doors can not be locked, this leads to service and safety issues for the south bathrooms, park district officials say.

The Crystal Lake Park District will address the issues Thursday and decide whether to approve $17,850 for a concession stand door, new hinges and locks on doors, floor and other repairs needed to insure a more secure space, according to park district documents. The project is not currently planned for the 2020-21 fiscal year and so the city’s finance committee is recommending the park district board approve the re-allocation of funds currently earmarked for projects that will not be completed to the north bathrooms renovation project.

If approved, the project would take about one week, with plans to have the upgrades in place before May 28.

The upgrades would allow for a dedicated bathroom for park district programs and camps, allow wedding rentals to have a private men’s and women’s bathroom, reduce potential vandalism in the recently renovated south bathrooms, and increase overall building safety.

The park district board is set to meet starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Crystal Lake Park District administration building, 1 E. Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake.
